A couples weeks ago I went to a Christmas party hosted by my mother-in-law, and everyone in attendance went home with a little parting gift; chocolates, candles, small christmas decorations and the like. Among other things, I went home with these:
If you know me at all, I'm super picky about my christmas decorations (I bought all new tree ornaments for hubs and I last Christmas, lol) so I knew that I wouldn't put these to use, but I didn't want to waste them. It just so happened that I had some extra square instagram prints laying around. Thus, an idea was born.
Materials Needed:
- set of coasters (or you can buy tiles from the hardware store if you don't have any old coasters)
- If you are using tiles, you will need to purchase either cork or felt for the bottom of the tile. If you are using old coasters, there is probably already some kind of protective layer underneath
- Mod podge (or you can use craft glue diluted with water)
- sponge brush
- Photos, craft paper, or whatever else you want to cover your coasters with (you won't want to use anything printed on your inkjet printer)
- polyurethane spray as a sealant (this is optional: details below)
- tacky glue or rubber cement (this is optional: details below)
Instructions:
- Purchase some tiles, or prep your old coasters by cleaning the surface and allowing them to dry.
- Trace your tiles onto your paper, and then cut the paper/photo to about 1/8″ to 1/4″ smaller on each side, depending on how much of a border you want.
- Apply a light coat of mod podge on the coaster and center your paper/photo on top, smoothing out any wrinkles with your hands. Work on one coaster at a time, and don't try to lift up the paper once you'd stuck it on because it will make a mess! Let dry for twenty minutes.
- If you are adding felt/cork to the bottom, cut them out now as the glue is drying.
- Once dry, with your sponge brush, apply another coat of mod podge to eat tile. Let the coat dry for twenty minutes. Repeat this process 5-6 times.
- If adding felt/cork, glue to the bottom of your tile using tacky glue or rubber cement.
- Apply sealant, if using any. (please read below!!)
The mod podge takes a month to fully cure, so if you aren't applying a sealant you need to remember not to put anything hot on your coasters during that time!
I love the idea of giving these as gifts almost as much as the people receiving them will love them! Happy crafting!
