DIY Coaster Tutorial

A couples weeks ago I went to a Christmas party hosted by my mother-in-law, and everyone in attendance went home with a little parting gift; chocolates, candles, small christmas decorations and the like. Among other things, I went home with these:

If you know me at all, I'm super picky about my christmas decorations (I bought all new tree ornaments for hubs and I last Christmas, lol) so I knew that I wouldn't put these to use, but I didn't want to waste them. It just so happened that I had some extra square instagram prints laying around. Thus, an idea was born.

Materials Needed:
  1. set of coasters (or you can buy tiles from the hardware store if you don't have any old coasters)
  2. If you are using tiles, you will need to purchase either cork or felt for the bottom of the tile. If you are using old coasters, there is probably already some kind of protective layer underneath
  3. Mod podge (or you can use craft glue diluted with water)
  4. sponge brush
  5. Photos, craft paper, or whatever else you want to cover your coasters with (you won't want to use anything printed on your inkjet printer)
  6. polyurethane spray as a sealant (this is optional: details below)
  7. tacky glue or rubber cement (this is optional: details below)

Instructions:
  1. Purchase some tiles, or prep your old coasters by cleaning the surface and allowing them to dry.
  2. Trace your tiles onto your paper, and then cut the paper/photo to about 1/8″ to 1/4″ smaller on each side, depending on how much of a border you want.
  3. Apply a light coat of mod podge on the coaster and center your paper/photo on top, smoothing out any wrinkles with your hands. Work on one coaster at a time, and don't try to lift up the paper once you'd stuck it on because it will make a mess! Let dry for twenty minutes.
  4. If you are adding felt/cork to the bottom, cut them out now as the glue is drying.
  5. Once dry, with your sponge brush, apply another coat of mod podge to eat tile. Let the coat dry for twenty minutes. Repeat this process 5-6 times.
  6. If adding felt/cork, glue to the bottom of your tile using tacky glue or rubber cement.
  7. Apply sealant, if using any. (please read below!!)
The mod podge takes a month to fully cure, so if you aren't applying a sealant you need to remember not to put anything hot on your coasters during that time!

I love the idea of giving these as gifts almost as much as the people receiving them will love them! Happy crafting!

Hello, me or: What the past eleven months have taught me

hello, me

I've come to realize a few things about myself since moving to Las Vegas this past January. Some good, some bad (but that's the way it goes).

  1. I almost always need to be doing something creative. Otherwise, I feel lost and not like myself.
  2. I cut my hair to my shoulders and wonder why I didn't do it sooner.
  3. I am even more of a nerd than I thought I was (and proud of it)
  4. I really am tired almost all the time regardless of how much or how little I slept the night before.
  5. Not all friends are meant to be in your life forever, and that's okay.
  6. Photography makes me unbelievably happy.
  7. It is possible to complete the 50 Book Challenge
  8. Not working was fun for the first few months, but now I'm just getting tired of it and am very anxious to get a job and swing back into a routine.
  9. No matter how tight you are with your best friends, thousands of miles in between is still a hell of a lot to bear.
  10. You think you couldn't love a person more, until you marry them and your heart feels like it could burst from it all. (I can only imagine how much further it grows when children first come into the picture).
  11. I have a little OCD in me; I just needed my husband to bring it out of me.
  12. The bigger the cup of tea the better.
  13. I always wanted a sister, and it's been amazing having one who lives so close to me (my other sister-in-law is back in Toronto, before which she was in Vancouver and Scotland).
  14. I am definitely not a person who can stay up late.
  15. I am more traditional that I thought; I have come up with a few traditions that I want my husband and I to start re: christmas and anniversaries.
  16. It will probably take me a few years before I begin to miss snow.
  17. I like bright coloured lipstick, like in the photo above.
  18. I have more patience that I thought.
  19. I have high expectations when it comes to work environments; mainly I want to work with nice, fun, hardworking, friendly people. I don't think that's too much to ask for.
  20. I still have an obsessive need to write lists.

Hello December and your drop in temperatures. Hello warmer jackets and wind blown hair, hello Christmas parties and too much food. Hello to homemade gifts and wrapping presents, egg nog and christmas tree scented candles. Hello to dreams of nights spent cuddled on the couch watching movies with my hubby.
